There are "no preparations" for US President President Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "in the near term", a White House official has announced.
Last Thursday the US president stated he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Budapest soon to address the war in Ukraine.
A initial discussion between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the White House said the two had had a "constructive" call and that a meeting was not "required".
The White House declined to provide additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.
Trump had discussed a Budapest summit over the phone with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Various sources indicated his meeting with Zelensky had been a "heated exchange", with sources suggesting Trump had pressured him to relinquish extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a agreement with Moscow.
Yet, on Monday the American president embraced a peace initiative backed by Kyiv and EU officials to halt the conflict on the current front line.
"Leave it as is where it stands," he said.
Russia has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the current line of contact.
The Russian government was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister commented on this week, implying that pausing conflict would simply constitute a brief pause.
The "fundamental issues" of the war needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a range of maximalist demands that involve the acknowledgment of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.
The Ukrainian president said talks regarding the battle positions were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to prevent dialogue.
He additionally stated the sole subject that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to Ukraine.
Putin's unplanned conversation with the US leader last Thursday occurred before rumors that the United States was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could potentially strike deep into Russia.
Zelensky stated it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had emerged as a "significant input" in international relations", he added.
