Ashes Individual Ratings: What England Cricketers Received the Lowest Grade?

England Player Evaluations

Crawley – 1

Expected in Aussie pitches but managed just the fourth Ashes pair from an England opener facing only 11 balls.

Duckett – 5

Made starts during each knock. His dismissal on Saturday was when it began to fall apart for the English side.

Ollie Pope – Six

Seems better due to technical tweaks. The first Test of a series is usually his strongest, after which his form dips. The team need him to build on this.

Joe Root – One

Far away from that first hundred in Australia. The side need the wisdom of their best player to have any chance to bounce back from this defeat.

Harry Brook – 5

His half-century in the first innings was lively, yet important. Poor shot in the second innings.

Stokes – 6

Returned after being injured to take a five-for, but looked short of rhythm with the bat. Lost control in the field against Head's aggressive batting.

Jamie Smith – Four

Could have the skills for Australia, yet must to smarten up. Can expect a lot of short bowling going forward.

Gus Atkinson – Five

Part of the strong England first-innings bowling performance and attempted to carry the fight with the bat in the second innings. Part of the bowlers that fell apart during the match.

Brydon Carse – 5

Similar to the previous, with added mustard of getting dominated by Travis Head.

Jofra Archer – 5

Appeared impressive with the ball in the first innings and proved the best among struggling teammates later. Could still have an impact on the series.

Wood – Five

Went without a wicket, but extremely impressive to even take part considering his absence.

Australian Team Individual Evaluations

Jake Weatherald – Six

First-timer had tough luck to be exposed against Archer early on, later played his part in the sensational run chase.

Khawaja – Three

A bizarre Test. Did not look fit and had time off the field. Held on to several important catches in the slips, but also seemed slow in the field. Earns a point for the injury that allowed Head to bat as opener.

Labuschagne – 7

A successful comeback to the side. Absorbed the English bowling pressure better than most initially, and backed up Head in the second.

Steve Smith – Five

Seemed out of sorts in the first innings. Needless before the game comments about Panesar.

Head – Nine

Possibly unfair to not award a perfect score, but he played a pretty poor shot initially. His second-innings hundred proved to be an all-time great performance.

Cameron Green – 5

Claimed the crucial dismissal of Pope early. Rattled by a Mark Wood bouncer during his innings. Hardly needed in the second half.

Alex Carey – 5

Tried a counter-attack versus England's bowlers early in the match. Neat behind the stumps.

Mitchell Starc – Nine

Shouldered the burden of the attack in the absence of Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood with the first Aussie Ashes series 10-for in 20 years.

Boland – 6

Below top form initially. Got better later to trigger the England collapse.

Brendan Doggett – Six

Steady first appearance. More than able stand-in for Cummins and others.

Nathan Lyon – 2

Almost an onlooker in a match dominated by pace. Maybe picked up an injury after being hit by Wood.
