Barca Manager Hansi Flick Vows to Change Behavior for Family

Hansi Flick

The Barcelona coach won the European Cup with Bayern Munich in 2020.

Barca head coach Hansi Flick states he hopes to avoid his young family members witnessing the actions that resulted in his red card during the match against Girona.

Flick received a yellow card for sarcastically clapping the fourth official when signaled four minutes of stoppage time, following Barcelona's wasted opportunities with the score level.

When substitute the defender scored a late winner for the club, Flick participated in the home crowd in joyous scenes and was given a another caution for making an inappropriate signal.

"I dislike seeing myself in such a condition on TV, and I hope to prevent my grandchildren from seeing their grandfather like that," Flick explained. "So I probably have to change my conduct."

The Coach Explains Emotion to Devotion for the Club

Speaking at a news conference before Barcelona meet the Greek side in the European competition, Flick attributed the gesture for which he was penalised to the depth of feeling he has for the club, which he has managed since this year.

He was manager at the Bundesliga club when the team were the initial to net eight times against Barcelona in more than 50 years in that year, and claims to have been understated on the touchline as his team advanced into a European Cup last four.

"I recall when I was coach of Bayern, the video of the game against Barcelona revealed that I had the same reaction to the initial, second and eighth goals," commented Flick. "Observers remarked I never smiled! Currently I'm showing greater passion, it's true, because this team has transformed me."

"Maybe I should restrain my emotions, but I adore Barcelona, Barcelona and its people, and that's why I consistently put in maximum effort."

Touchline Ban for Key Match

Flick's red card includes a sideline suspension which will restrict him to the seating area of the Bernabeu as his team face Real Madrid in El Clasico on this weekend – though the club are appealing against the ruling.

Club president the president claimed a "white hand" was behind official Jesus Gil Manzano's decisions against the opponent – implying favoritism toward Real Madrid – though the coach himself refused to get involved in allegations of officiating bias.

"I had nothing against the official," he said. "I wasn't complaining at him but he interpreted it that way and that's a situation I have to acknowledge."
