California's Governor States He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028

Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.

"Yes, I would be lying otherwise," Newsom commented when asked about contemplating a presidential run post the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."

Newsom's current term as governor concludes in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he emphasized that any choice is not imminent.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Rising Profile as a Administration Opponent

Newsom has emerged as a prominent adversary of the former president's team, leveraging his social media accounts and advocating for a initiative that would boost Democratic House seats in response to redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has drawn criticism from adversaries.

Federal Funding Dispute

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor is indifferent about the state's residents in a weekend appearance on a major news network. The secretary revealed intentions to cut federal funds from California and warned revoking the authority to issue CDLs.

"I plan to withdraw $160 million from the state," he stated, following a this week's deadly accident in the state involving an undocumented trucker that caused three deaths and casualties.

Newsom's office pointed out that the federal government had approved the worker's status on several occasions, which enabled him to receive a CDL under federal law.

Duffy had previously stated he was holding back $40 million from California for failing to implement linguistic standards for commercial drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand national statutes," the governor's team responded in a recent statement countering the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: The state's truck drivers had a death rate much lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."

Polling Data and Campaign Considerations

A recently conducted survey showed that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate believed that Newsom should run for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has grown to an mean of about one-third from around 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an typical level of over 40% to 38.4%.

Earlier this year, Newsom stated while on a trip several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for 2028.

He noted his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.

"The notion that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, remarkable," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I await who emerges in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
