Catherine's Traditional Yuletide Musical Celebration Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers

The Princess of Wales is hosting her customary Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with guests including royals, celebrities and local heroes who have helped their communities.

The large audience will enjoy a blend of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from performers including award-winning actors.

Centred Around Compassion and Love

The focus of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Among the guests will be Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose daughter died of a tumour, and who set up a charity, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often quietly and unspoken, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the circumstances of individuals," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the carol service.

A Steady Comeback

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own measured re-emergence to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Performance and Potential

Attendees entering the Abbey will be entertained by talented youth performers aided by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of musical tuition.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who is a trumpet player and is from southwest Wales, has been helped by the charity, with funding assisting with equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "awesome" to be playing at the concert.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now enrolled at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to hone their artistic talents.

A Sisterly Duo

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who plays the euphonium, will be present at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many important people," she said.

Within the audience will be representatives of different generations.

That will include young Saphia Turner, nine, honouree of a prize for youthful altruism, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to collect donations for food banks.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Taking to the stage will be Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "a dream come true."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be broadcast on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
