Chicago White Sox Land Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Multi-Million Dollar Deal.

In a notable move for their rebuilding roster, the South Side team have signed slugger Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a two-year contract with the power-hitting player.

Deal Structure and Incentives

The agreement includes a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, in addition to annual pay of sixteen million for the upcoming season and $17 million for the final year.

Additionally, Murakami's 2027 salary may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:

• $1 million for winning the league MVP award.
• Half a million dollars for placing second or third in MVP voting.
• A quarter-million for placing fourth through 10th.
• Another $250,000 for winning the top rookie honor.

His deal includes that he will not be optioned to the minors without his permission and grants him a free agent at the conclusion of the contract. Additional perks include a dedicated interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.

Posting Fee and Team Legacy

As part of the signing, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club get a 15% cut of any triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami is set to become the fourth player from Japan to suit up for the White Sox, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami during their time in Japan.

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, joins a young lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a 60-102 season, finishing at the bottom in the division but representing a 19-game improvement from the year before campaign.

A two-time Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a record-breaking 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, breaking the longstanding record for a Japanese-born player previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was shortened to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Even with striking out 64 Ks, he still managed .273 with 22 HRs and 47 runs batted in.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBI, and 977 Ks in 892 games. Initially playing mostly at first base, he has since transitioned to third.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's heroics were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a walk-off double that brought home Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic 6-5 victory. The following day in the final against the United States, he blasted a game-tying home run in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's subsequent 3-2 victory.

The new White Sox addition is scheduled to be unveiled at a media availability on the coming Monday.
