Personalities from across the political divide and the Hollywood world are uniting to condemn Donald Trump for his remarks following the shocking deaths of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles home, Trump took to his platform to label the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". In a message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bond was established at a substantial amount.
The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.
This is a appalling and despicable statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the remarks. Goldberg referenced prior comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own demise because they didn’t support him. So sick."
A number of Republican lawmakers also voiced dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also alluded to struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being within families.
Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged others in his party to justify the statements.
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy if Trump be reelected to power.
"We see autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced violence for political ends unequivocally after the killing of another political figure.
Providing a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" as posing on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
