Delhi Rises to Toxic Haze Post Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with breathing dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "severe" category.

Extremely High Pollution Levels

Various sections of Delhi recorded an pollution measurement over 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended level recommended by the WHO.

Fireworks Restrictions and Current Changes

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the festival also sparked a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab pointing to deteriorating air quality in Lahore on hazardous particles originating in across the border following the events.

Long-Standing Pollution Problem

Alarmingly severe levels of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have persisted as a significant issue for over a decade and a half, with the situation continuing to worsen.

During Diwali, the levels of hazardous particulate matter in the air has been found to shoot up to 70% higher the worst readings ever recorded in Beijing, which was once regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Various Pollution Contributors

The situation in the capital is resulting from a convergence of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, development work, rubbish burning and smoke from farm burning in adjacent regions of Punjab and Haryana.

In these regions, farmers regularly burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, producing hazardous haze that then gets trapped over the city as cooler air descends.

Medical and Economic Impact

Public health and economic toll on the approximately 33 million residents living in the capital region is significant, according to numerous research.

These hazardous conditions results in increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory disorders, and can even lead to malignancies.

Air quality crisis is projected to be causing 10,000 premature deaths annually in Delhi.
