Democratic officials voiced anger after the ex-president accused a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and declared they should be detained and punished "through capital punishment" following their release of a contentious video.
The clip, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic congress members who previously served in military or defense positions.
"As we did, you all swore an oath to safeguard and uphold this constitution," the lawmakers declared in the brief video. "Currently, the risks to our democratic foundation don't only come from abroad, but from right here at home. Our statutes are clear, you can refuse illegal orders, you can decline improper directives, you must reject illegal orders. No one has to carry out orders that violate the statutes or our national charter."
The clip appeared to provoke a furious reaction from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he declared: "This is really concerning, and Dangerous to our Country. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Democratic leadership issued a joint announcement denouncing the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no role in America," they wrote. "Representatives who appeared in the video all served our nation with tremendous loyalty and honor. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous death threats against congressional representatives, and call on GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to ensure the protection of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away take down these extreme digital publications and withdraw his aggressive rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the announcement added.
The officials who were featured in the video also issued a response.
"We serve as veterans and national security professionals who care for this United States and swore an oath to defend and support the national charter of the United States," they declared. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we plan to keep it. No warning, pressure, or call for violence will deter us from that fundamental responsibility."
"The significant point is that the ex-president considers it liable to punishment by execution for us to restate the law," they added. "Military personnel should understand that we have their support as they execute their vow to the founding principles and duty to follow only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "Every American must join forces and denounce the president's requests for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a period for principled stance."
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's comments and shared on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is calling for the death of elected officials."
He stated: "This represents an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this right away and without qualification."
The Conservative official justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This constitutes very harmful, you have prominent officials of the government instructing soldiers to ignore directives, I think that represents unprecedented in American history."
The Conservative representative also reportedly informed the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the crime of sedition" but that "lawyers have to examine the language and decide all that."
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when inquired by a journalist, "Would the president want to kill members of Congress?", the executive branch representative replied: "No."
"We should understand about what the former president is responding to," the spokesperson declared. "There are current representatives of the federal government who coordinated to organize a video message to members of the US military, to current military personnel urging them to defy the executive's lawful orders."
She said: "The purity of our military rests on the command structure, and if that structure is violated, it can cause people getting killed, it can result in confusion, and precisely what these elected officials ... are basically encouraging."
