Eric Adams to Endorse Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

New York City Mayor Mayor Adams has announced his plan to support former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite months of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Just last month, Adams had lashed out at the former governor, labeling him a ā€œdeceptive figure and a untruthful personā€ and alleging of having ā€œa history of pushing Black candidates out of races.ā€ Yet, in a new statement, Mayor Adams changed his position, revealing he now intends to campaign alongside Cuomo in areas where he maintains strong support.

ā€œI think that it is imperative to mobilize the communities of color that have experienced urban displacement on how important this race is,ā€ Adams remarked.

He added, ā€œThey have watched their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those areas, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those areas and get them involved.ā€

Election Landscape and Recent Events

The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the competition between Cuomo and progressive candidate his main rival, whose rise in the polls has drawn interest worldwide and symbolized aspirations for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democratic party.

During a recent mayoral debate, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would decline Adams’s endorsement if extended.

Earlier this year, Adams had launched his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after facing legal accusations which were later thrown out in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.

During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor answered journalists inquiring into the endorsement plan by stating, ā€œI'm meeting Andrew this evening.ā€

The announcement came a day after the two politicians were seen attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's season opener at Madison Square Garden, which occurred right after a heated candidate debate.
