Flight Delays in America Set to Worsen, Transport Chief Warns

American flight controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official told Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their jobs uncompensated.

But a number have been absent, leading airports to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to setbacks due to climate and additional factors.

More than 3,000 American flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he anticipates the circumstances to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," he said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their concerns directly.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I drive Uber, can I find another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of employees - among the peak since the closure started.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second-longest halt in history.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of planes in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his interview, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead made a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I require my controllers concentrating on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at home," Duffy said.

On Sunday, certain flights were grounded at LAX due to employee deficits, causing interruption at the fifth most active terminal in the country and one of the busiest in the world, as well as additional travel extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert was issued at 8:45 AM local time on the weekend. Many flights were operating normally before noon.

Flights at Newark Airport, though, were postponed an mean of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the authority said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airport in the country, could experience difficulties from reduced staff later in the day.

Strain on US air travel helped end a government shutdown in 2019. At the time, the halt had reached its fifth week and affected flight services, including pilot training.

It prompted a number of flight controllers to remain absent on the same day on 25 January 2019, briefly halting travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

That same day, Donald Trump, who at the time was in his initial presidency as president, consented to approve a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the federal closure after 35 days.
