Gold Rises Past $4,000 to a Record High; Automotive Retailer Vertu Motors Reports of £5.5m Profit Hit from Jaguar Land Rover Disruption

Greetings, and welcome to our rolling coverage of business, the trading floors and the global economy.

Gold Tops Unprecedented $4,000 Milestone

The value of gold has surged above $4,000 an ounce for the initial instance, extending a rally driven by concerns over political drama in the Japanese market, the French economy and the US, where the federal shutdown has continued.

Spot gold rose by more than one percent to $4,029.46 an ounce, yet another record high, and is increased half again so far this year. This follows rises of twenty-seven percent last year and 13% the year before.

The safe-haven asset is seen as a secure investment in periods of uncertainty, and also acted as a buffer against increasing prices.

Market Sentiment and Market Opinions

Investment fund billionaire Ray Dalio equated the present time to the early 1970s when soaring inflation and substantial public borrowing and spending eroded trust in other assets.

It is comparable to the seventies ... how do you allocate your money?
Gold is a very excellent diversifier in the asset allocation. If you examine it just from a portfolio planning standpoint, you would perhaps have approximately fifteen percent of your portfolio in gold … because it is a single asset that does very well when the standard elements of the portfolio go down.

Investors’ appetite for gold-related assets seems strong. Market participants have been flocking to gold funds with investments hitting $64bn so far this year, based on data from the World Gold Council, with a unprecedented $17.3bn in September alone. National banks have also been buying gold.

Reasons Explaining the Gold Increase

Anticipations of further US interest rate cuts, concerns over international tensions, tariff policies and an artificial intelligence speculation, along with a weak dollar have fueled the surge in gold.

An market analyst, commodities strategist at ING, said:

Gold has undergone a historic rally, rising by 100% in a short period, spurred by central bank buying as it shifts from the US dollar, the US President’s trade war tactics and conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.
Moving forward, monetary authorities are acquiring more – the PBOC continued its purchasing run in last month for an eleventh month in a row despite historic levels – tariff disputes is continuing, global uncertainties persist, and ETF holdings keep growing while expectations of additional reductions intensify. All of this suggests that gold has additional upside.

Car Retailer Reports of Earnings Hit

The car sales firm Vertu has reported a £5.5m impact on its full-year income from “significant disruption” to its JLR retail outlets after the automotive manufacturer halted manufacturing for several weeks following a crippling cyber attack.

Its top executive the leader said it was an unfortunate situation to undergo operational challenges across the manufacturer’s dealerships” during September, a crucial time for car sales as license plates are updated.

Even though the circumstances are changing, it appears to be easing in recent days.

Vertu, which is located in the North East, announced all-time high revenues of £2.51 billion for the half-year to the August finish, higher than £2.47 billion a year earlier. Adjusted pre-tax profit fell by ten percent to £20 million.
