LeBron James was aware his monumental streak of reaching double digits was at risk. In that crucial moment, however, he wasn't bothered.
The correct basketball play involved passing the rock – so he did. Consequently, the unprecedented record was over.
LeBron's astounding run of over 1,200 straight NBA regular season outings scoring at least ten concluded during a recent game, when the NBA's all-time scoring leader had only eight points in the Los Angeles Lakers' 123-120 win against Toronto. He provided the decisive pass, setting up Rui Hachimura to knock down a three-pointer to win the game.
“None,” James stated after being questioned regarding the conclusion of his run. “The team got the victory.”
He might have sought to clinch the game – while also extending the streak – on the final possession, yet he opted to pass to his teammate stationed in the corner. Rui connected, with LeBron raised his arms triumphantly.
You have to play the game correctly. Always make the smart play,” James explained. That has always been my M.O.. It's how I was instructed the game. That's what I've done throughout my career.”
“LeBron is acutely aware of his point total he has at all times,” said the team's head coach JJ Redick. He acted like he’s done countless times.”
He returned to the game one last time at under five and a half minutes to go, the result and his personal record both hanging in the balance. At that stage, he had a mere six points on 3 for 15 from the field by that point.
He managed a basket with under two minutes remaining to knot the score but then missed a shot with 1:01 left that would have pushed him into double figures.
He avoided taking one more attempt – though the opportunity was there. Austin Reaves gave James the ball in the waning seconds, yet LeBron decided to dish it off instead.
The basketball deities, if you approach it the right way, they tend to repay you,” Redick added.
The record commenced back in January 2007. It stood as the longest double-digit streak the league has ever seen: His Airness, Michael Jordan previously held a streak of 866 consecutive games with 10+ points, Kareem recorded 787, and The Mailman had the fourth-longest run with 575.
“He’s such an unselfish player,” noted teammate a fellow Laker.
He simply plays the sport. He could have shot but due to the player he is and his personality as a person, he made the pass, passed it to Rui and secured the game.”
Getting to ten points was usually a formality well before the start of fourth quarters. During James’s streak, he had reached ten points entering the fourth over twelve hundred times prior to Thursday.
However, two of those rare games below ten points through three quarters had occurred in the last week: He recorded nine points entering the final quarter against Dallas on 28 November, then had six going into the fourth against Phoenix earlier in the week.
He succeeded in extend the streak in the Phoenix game. In the following contest, it finished – and he celebrated anyway.
I only ever make the best play. That comes naturally, no matter what,” James affirmed. If you make the unselfish play, the game gods consistently returning the favor.”
