According to the UN refugee agency, over 60,000 people have left the Sudanese city of el-Fasher, which was captured by the militia Rapid Support Forces recently.
There have been multiple executions and human rights violations as RSF fighters entered the city after an year-and-a-half encirclement marked by food shortages and heavy bombardment.
The exodus of those running from the violence towards the community of Tawila, roughly 80km (50 miles) to the west of el-Fasher, had grown in the last several days, as stated by United Nations refugee agency representative.
Survivors were telling shocking accounts of violence, such as rape, and the agency was finding it difficult to find sufficient housing and nourishment for them.
Each child was experiencing undernourishment, she commented.
Estimates suggest that over 150,000 people are still stranded in el-Fasher, which had been the military's last stronghold in the western part of Darfur.
The Rapid Support Forces has denied extensive claims that the killings in el-Fasher are ethnically motivated and resemble a pattern of the Arab paramilitaries focusing on ethnic minorities.
Nevertheless the RSF has arrested one of its militiamen, Abu Lulu, who has been implicated in extrajudicial killings.
The group distributed recordings showing the fighter's apprehension after verification that he was responsible for the execution of several unarmed men in the vicinity of el-Fasher.
Video sharing service has acknowledged that it has banned the account associated with Lulu. Uncertainty exists whether he had operated the account in his identity.
Sudan was thrown into a civil war in April 2023 when a brutal contest for control began between its army and the RSF.
It has caused a famine and accusations of mass killing in the western Sudan.
In excess of 150,000 individuals have lost their lives in the fighting around the country, and roughly 12 million have fled their dwellings in what the UN has called the world's largest humanitarian crisis.
The capture of el-Fasher strengthens the regional separation in the country, with the Rapid Support Forces now in dominance of the western region and significant areas of adjacent Kordofan to the southern area, and the army controlling the capital, Khartoum, central and eastern areas along the Red Sea.
The two warring rivals had been allies - coming to power together in a takeover in 2021 - but split over an globally supported plan to move towards democratic governance.
