New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point throughout his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core platform, did not confirm this decision right away after his electoral win in November.

"This decision came down to the security of my family and the imperative to directing my complete efforts on implementing the platform on affordability voters supported," stated Mamdani in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district known for its diverse cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will forever remain inside me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

However his rivals, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he came from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a place for civic gatherings, and championed significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting far removed from his previous Astoria home.

With its butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, meaning the city imposes caps on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the price of rent exceeds what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
