Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not just the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
