In a clear message to Western nations, Leader Vladimir Putin informed PM Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to maintain “continuous” shipments of energy resources to India. These remarks came during a summit where both heads of state met in New Delhi and declared their partnership were “resilient to foreign coercion.”

A Statement For the West

The statement, made on Friday, appeared to be targeted at western countries, that have sought to urge New Delhi into reducing its close ties with Moscow. The context is in response to previous Washington's moves, notably the imposition of import duties against Indian goods because of its purchase of Moscow's energy exports.

“Our nation is a reliable source of fuel and anything necessary for the development of India’s energy sector,” the Russian president remarked. “We are ready to keep guaranteeing the uninterrupted supply of fuel for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

Modi, without mentioning oil specifically, supported the theme by stating that “secure fuel supplies has been a strong and vital cornerstone of the India-Russia partnership.”

Challenging US Interference

Before the talks, during a TV appearance, Putin had questioned American pressure on India's dealings with Russia. He argued, “If the US has the right to buy our atomic materials, why shouldn’t India claim the equivalent access?”
