The most severe potential impacts of the global heating for the UK have been detailed by scientists, encompassing a blistering 4C increase in mean temperatures to a 6.5-foot increase in sea level. A separate possibility predicts a plunge of 6C in temperature following the shutdown of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact farming and energy needs.

Possible Outcomes, Not Predictions

These consequences, some of which are associated with critical climate thresholds, are viewed as improbable but credible. The scientists said that these projections filled a gap in planning that had left the UK unprepared for catastrophic possibilities.

"The worst-case scenarios we have outlined are not forecasts, but they are credible," commented Nigel Arnell who led the study. "The UK has been formulating policy lacking the frameworks to plan for catastrophic outcomes. We've now supplied decision-makers what they need to get ready for future conditions they hope never happen, but dare not dismiss."

A Range of Severe Conditions Possibilities

A further series of worst-case scenarios details the potential extent of severe conditions between now and the close of the 2100s. These indicate that temperatures could rocket in certain periods by up to 6C above historical levels, while rainfall could be 300% of normal levels.

The likelihood of the worst-case outcomes occurring remains uncertain due to unknown factors about what steps will be taken to combat climate change and how the planet's climate will behave. This approach was likened to defence planning or resilience checks for financial systems.

Major Outcome Highlights

  • Severe Heating: Global temperatures rising well above 4C by 2100 could happen if climate action fails or if powerful amplifying effects like the tropical forests perishing unleash its enormous store of carbon. This would cause intense and enduring heatwaves and droughts affecting the UK in summer.
  • Ocean Circulation Failure: A critical sea current, the North Atlantic current, is losing strength and showing signs of collapse due to climate change. A full shutdown commencing by 2030 would lead to a drastic cooling in the UK. "Crop production would struggle enormously and water supplies would be completely altered," noted the lead researcher.
  • Rapid Sea Level Rise: A rise of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could happen if ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica melt abruptly, flooding seaside communities. Differing from the other scenarios, this risk is already understood by planners.
  • Aerosol Effect: Temperatures could also be pushed higher by about 0.75C if pollution from industry is rapidly cleaned up. This unexpected result occurs because tiny specks from industrial activity block solar radiation from reaching the ground.

Preparing for the Unthinkable

These dire projections could be utilized in planning the development of critical national infrastructure, such as housing developments, energy plants and water management networks. Knowledge about these climate risks could also speed the drive to slash carbon pollution.

The analysis formulated the severe projections using a mix of past data and records, computer simulations and climate physics. The scenarios omit broader worldwide issues like the devastation of food supplies and resource wars.

This work was commissioned as part of a official risk assessment framework. Previous assessments have stated that too little consideration was being allocated to high-consequence, low-probability risks.

An independent advisory body has recommended that the UK must "adapt to 2C" and evaluate the threats for four degrees. Earlier government strategies have been described as being "inadequate" by some observers.

A national response commented: "Climate change is at the center of the country's focus, both preparing for impacts and transitioning to a renewable energy leader. It is essential that the UK is resilient for the effects."
