TGA's Future Class Program Looks Like It's Discontinued

In addition to recognizing video games in different award categories, TGA in the past showcased a Future Class program. Individuals chosen within the Future Class were designed to reflect the “bright, bold, and inclusive future” of gaming, akin to how certain annual lists spotlight prominent figures. However, this initiative is going away, per event organizers.

Beyond Just Honor: The Purpose of the Program

This initiative was more than a tribute to prominent figures in the gaming industry. It also served as a hub for professional connections and career development. While certain past members voiced gratitude for their involvement with Future Class, some felt that the program was insufficient for its cohort. Feedback targeted multiple elements of Future Class, from the insufficient support to be present at the show to providing no compensation for guiding new members.

Past Controversy and Program Hiatus

The program seemed to be paused in the current year, when TGA did not include the recognition during the event. This omission followed a previous year controversy where a number of those in the program signed a open letter calling on the event to leverage its influence to voice support for a particular global crisis.

"We were given the role of representatives of a brighter tomorrow — as such, our duty towards you and all the gamers globally compels us to speak up," the statement read.

It also argued that the gaming industry often marginalized specific communities, and called on creators in the space to improve.

Formal Confirmation and Online Changes

While this is the second consecutive year that The Game Awards has not selected a Future Class cohort, event organizers had not officially announced its cancellation previously. The omission has been noted, in part, due to the apparent deletion of all references of the program on the the event’s online portal. The key organizer has not yet replied to a request for a statement.

Next year’s Game Awards are planned for December 11.
