The American captain Vows He Will 'Never Recover From' Crushing Team USA Defeat

Keegan Bradley at a media briefing

The American golfer has participated in three editions of the tournament as player or captain but is yet to win it.

Keegan Bradley admits he will "not ever recover from" Team America's loss to Europe following "one of the toughest times" in his career after the defeat at Bethpage.

The 39-year-old led the American squad at Bethpage in September, witnessing a disappointing performance as Europe secured a 15-13 victory.

Bradley's appointment made him the youngest captain for either team since the legendary golfer in 1963.

But he accepted that some decisions were mistakes following his team selections and venue preparations faced scrutiny and criticism in the aftermath, as Europe became the initial squad to claim victory on foreign soil since 2012.

"After the tournament, this has been one of the toughest times in my life," stated the captain in his first news conference since the event.

"When you win, it's glory for a lifetime - but I didn't and I must live with this outcome for the rest of my life."

"There's no part of me that thinks I'll ever get over this. This event has been particularly harsh on me. I'll forever wonder and regret."

Notwithstanding a Dramatic Final Day Comeback Attempt

Even with a inspiring last-round rally effort, the American team faced an insurmountable challenge once Europe built a 5½-2½ lead on the opening day and increased it to 11½-4½ by the end of day two - the largest margin going into the final day in modern Ryder Cup history.

And although the hosts won 8½ points from the 12 singles matches, it wasn't enough.

"You put so much into it, and you have all this planning, and the first two days unfolded disastrously beyond our worst expectations," said Bradley.

Leader's Individual Struggles

Bradley had been expected to fulfil a player-captain role but had a "change of heart" months before and decided against competing in New York.

"During the initial training session, I was out on the tee, and I was watching the players proceed down the course all together, and I said to myself 'I wish I was playing - that's the essence. I'm absent.'"

But Bradley says his choice was correct in excluding himself from the team since he felt "physically exhausted" by the second day of the match.

"I simply believed I could do both jobs," he stated.

A History in the Tournament Disappointments

Bradley has experienced defeat in three Ryder Cups as a player and captain. He still hasn't unpacked his luggage from the 2012 defeat at Medinah and also participated of the losing US side in Scotland a decade ago.

And, despite being unsure about future opportunities, he affirms he will continue to offer his services for future editions.

The next Ryder Cup takes place at Adare Manor from September 17-19 2027.
