The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The previous series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for further series.

However, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
