The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

As I walk into the room, the young midfielder grabs a football he won’t let go of until after our chat. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and natural ability won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back home,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Season and European Breakthrough

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to victory and being named best player.

A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses he must to control his aggression, after being sent off at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals

With his current club, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Right now, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”

Moving forward, Lamine Camara blends a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the game.
