The New Mayor Promises a 'Dawn' for NYC in Maiden Speech

During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an bold start to his term.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
