The Showrunner Shares He Knows How Pluribus Will End... At the Moment.

The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

As the debut season of the popular sci-fi show wrapping up—and a second season already in development—Gilligan and his team reflected on the fan response and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Audience Reaction

Anyone might to get swayed by the constant speculation and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to steer clear of all that.

“It's like being force fed something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by online forums.”

“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.

The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan Know the Ending of Pluribus?

So if Gilligan and his team are not listening by audience theories, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… sort of.

“There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a decent plan for a superior concept. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Alternatively, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.

“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Then again, why mess with the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
