Van de Ven Brace Ends Everton's Run at Brand New Stadium

Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at each end of the field

After a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
