Worried about soaring expenses and making ends meet? The Labour leader proposes the answer: try nibbling the flag!

An long-standing accusation directed against elected officials is that they pursue public opinion as tirelessly as terriers following a caravan. When voters express concern, officials react and express a response, no matter how ill-considered. However exists a single issue more than any other that Britons claim causes them daily anxiety. This issue is pushing numerous to extreme measures. It's the same issue that may well decide the upcoming election. This is well-known, yet consistently flashes deepest red in surveys. Nevertheless it goes unmentioned by political leaders and gets no immediate government focus. And not a single publication is shouting about it with prominent coverage.

This represents an example showing how skewed the political system and the media are in 2025, demonstrating how elected representatives and reporters work against the concerns of the public and viewers. I'm discussing the cost of living.

Mention it among government officials, and those listening will assume you are regurgitating recent history. The household budget emergency? Didn't that belong to the previous government's problem? After the Kremlin attacked the neighboring country, and destabilized fuel prices in the process. Huge public anger; a costly giveaway; many glittering careers lost. Perfect content, certainly, for a compelling installment of retrospective examination.

But for the majority of British people, this isn't the stuff of memories. They continue in a cost of living crisis. Whether at Ocado to discount stores, food prices keep rising. Educational attire cost far too much. Higher education costs for the new term – jacked up. Furthermore last week the maximum allowed fuel expenses was hiked – just in time for the colder months.

Approximately four years following Russia's invasion of Ukraine sent fuel bills soaring, the typical British family remains facing significant economic pressure. True, the central bank isn't worrying over inflation since it has gone from high levels to hovering around “only” 4%. Yet that's minimal reassurance for typical homes, who observe there are fewer bags during grocery trips – and their wages (grown significantly over recent years) hasn't kept up with cost increases (grown substantially in recent times) or fuel bills (that have generally increased by approximately five hundred pounds in only four years).

When the research firm various pollsters questions voters to name the primary issues in the country, the cost of living comes top. And regarding border control? It's increasing, and some other pollsters place it just ahead of economic pressures. However when participants are questioned the primary concerns in their daily existence, financial strain or financial pressures lead significantly.

So here is Britain's primary government challenge: rising bills. Perhaps you've encountered it come up in parent conversations or among neighbors. You may be part of the majority of UK families preparing for a colder home this winter. In which case, you will have been almost ignored by government officials.

“Westminster regards household expenses as a problem from previous administrations; they've progressed,” states a researcher with the polling firm. “However for ordinary citizens it's still their main problem.”

At focus groups, he's noticed that wherever the location and irrespective of the discussion theme, respondents can't stop discussing household expenses. Starting with health issues to green spaces, discussion inevitably circles back to expenses.

At a recent event days ago, Keir Starmer presented his big speech the day before fuel price setters increased the limit. The cost of living was referenced a mere couple of instances during the complete address. Patriotism? On five occasions. And flags? Well, he presented a whole section about them, along with a dreamy peroration regarding athletic achievements from past decades. “A nation that represented previous generations and our heritage,” declared the prime minister. However this nostalgic vision doesn't include room for the people working all the hours and wondering why they experience more month than money. Maybe even raising the omission is viewed as unpatriotic.

In this great displacement of government focus, the main contributor is the media. Research into national newspapers attention demonstrated over five hundred reports about migrants or immigration issues in just the past month. And how many regarding household expenses or necessary items or economic conditions? Fewer than fifty.

About significant numbers have entered the sea crossing recently. We can talk later regarding the ethics of our asylum system, but considering statistics alone that is a number almost insignificant compared to numerous families experiencing deficits with energy costs and with no repayment plan.

Addressing the excessive costs of homes, groceries, utilities and travel demands real politics, as opposed to the fake politics of waving national symbols and arresting pensioners for discussing {Palestine Action|
